Back in September, we started the renovation of our front porch. Our front porch was tired looking and honestly, unstable. If you recall, I shared my inspiration for the exterior of our home in the fall. Here’s another look at that beautiful home.
We decided to start with the front porch due to finances. Ryan tore everything down excluding the supports. For the floor and stairs, we decided to use composite decking by Trex. Composite decking is stronger, easier to clean, and relatively maintenance free. I selected wrought iron balusters for contrast. We used treated wood for the rest of the porch and painted it. We actually widened the stairs in the process of revamping the porch. The stairs are finally the width they really should have been from the start. Wow, it was just too tight before. It took a couple of weekends to complete, but I’m really pleased. Ryan did a great job! The house looks much better! Below are some before and after photos.
I’d eventually like to add skirting around the porch, remove the shutters, and add two new lights next to the front door. Until then, I am painting our front door. I decided to repaint the door a darker color to coordinate with the balusters. I’m not quite finished, but I really like the color. We will replace the storm door in the spring, and I’m hoping to add thicker white trim around the doors. These changes add needed curb appeal. Our garden beds took a beating with the snow, but we’ll be cleaning those up in the spring. I’d actually like to bring a professional in to rework the beds we built. We’ll also add the decorative caps to the porch once I finish painting them.
My attempts at garland around the door were a complete failure this year. Since we have vinyl siding and the temperatures have fluctuated, I can’t get it to stay up. Maybe next year! I decided to go natural this year, and I’m glad I did. I’ve never had a real tree and wreath until now. I’ve really enjoyed both on the porch.
As for the décor, let’s take a closer look. I have been decorating with lanterns for years. They were a bargain at IKEA. The luminaries are a new addition from Crate & Barrel. The sled, one of my favorite pieces, was given to me by my mother-in-law. It’s always a must on the front porch!
The front porch is a place we can enjoy now, and I can’t wait to see how the exterior evolves over the next year or so. I think we’re ready for the holidays with this bright and clean front porch. Are you ready for Christmas?
